Do I need to upload files in ASCII or binary mode?

Files must be uploaded in BINARY mode. Some FTP clients configured to automaticaly upload PHP files in ASCII (text) mode. It is wrong and useless configuration. You never need to upload PHP files in ASCII mode, so you can disable this option in your FTP client software settings. If files were uploaded in ASCII format, it will cause errors for sure.
